China's renewable energy consumption proportion steadily increases

Currently, renewable energy has become a major direction for global energy transformation, a key tool for addressing climate change, and a vital force driving sustainable global economic growth and universal employment. Its impact on the global energy landscape and geopolitics is increasingly evident. Recently, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce New Energy Chamber of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission's Energy Research Institute, and the Center for Global Energy Policy at Columbia University jointly held a "China-US Energy Policy Video Exchange." Zeng Shaojun, Vice President and Secretary-General of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce New Energy Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director of the China New Energy Industry Research Institute, stated that during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China's renewable energy scale continued to grow rapidly, and the proportion of renewable energy consumption steadily increased, entering a new stage of high-proportion incremental replacement and regional stock replacement.

"From 2020 to 2025, China's renewable energy will basically achieve grid parity, and renewable energy will become the main source of incremental energy in most regions," said Zeng Shaojun.

The All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce's New Energy Chamber of Commerce launched a report titled "Research on Several Major Issues in China's New Energy Development during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period" in July 2019. The report states that key tasks for China's new energy development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period include accelerating the simultaneous development of centralized and decentralized wind power, promoting the integrated and diversified development of solar energy, facilitating the large-scale development of biomass power, advancing the industrialized utilization of geothermal energy, building a multi-energy complementary smart energy system, and upgrading supporting integrated pipeline network infrastructure.

At the same time, the "14th Five-Year Plan" period is a critical period for China's energy transformation and reform. We should combine energy transformation and power system reform to innovate renewable energy power development models, give full play to the decisive role of the market in resource allocation, and establish a number of comprehensive energy services and industry integration demonstration projects based on enterprise model innovation; better play the role of government macro-control, improve the renewable energy industry system, strive to promote industrial quality change, efficiency change, and power change, improve total factor productivity, and enhance the core competitiveness of the industry.

The report suggests that China should strengthen cooperation, fully grasp the new changes and trends in energy cooperation, carry out more proactive energy cooperation, and build a global industrial chain cooperation system. "Overall, the development of renewable energy is a strategic issue. It is not only an important measure to address climate change, stimulate the economy, and create jobs, but also, through people-to-people diplomacy, especially through exchanges and cooperation among industry associations, jointly exploring solutions to major issues, it will play a positive role in further consolidating consensus between China and the United States and bridging friction caused by differences in understanding of issues," Zeng Shaojun emphasized.
